Chapter 1: Friendliness

When you search what friendliness is in terms of definitions, the answer provided by oxford language is “the quality of being friendly; affability,”; meaning one has to have the quality of having a good-natured manner. Acts of friendliness can be shown in a variety of ways; daily acts of them may be such as striking conversation with someone while you wait in line, making introductions to people in your network, asking someone how their day is going, and as simple as offering help when you notice someone struggling. A simple smile back can make someone’s day better; it is like buying happiness for free. Individuals can have tremendous power in society, and knowing how to use it properly holds one’s ethical and moral mind accountable.

Friendliness is being there for one in good and bad times, making others feel welcomed, and showing that you care even if you are not necessarily "friends". The impact of being friendly to another at a free cost displays the power of virtue one has and is willing to offer to others; even if you do not expect the same treatment back, you know you are making someone's day potentially better. I believe that if we all are friendly by default to one another, everyone would have a higher chance of having a more enjoyable day and a much better character. Discovering all the abilities we have to give to another at a free cost, aiming to uphold moral principles, and pushing one to fulfill human potential is the biggest gift one can give to oneself and share with others.

So, why be friendly to another? No one can expect how one should act, but at the end of the day, we still do. Do I wait every day to open the door for someone if I notice them and they are a bit further away from where I am? Sure, why not? Does it make me happy? I believe it does. I do not have to wait in the cold for someone to arrive at the door, and yet I do; I feel like I should be doing it, although I know I do not have to. Being friendly is not necessary, but it adds to one's personality; it says a lot about their character and mannerisms. When someone does not do the same to you, leave it, do not overthink it, and move on, you never truly know what one is thinking. Still, if you want to do better, be friendly with your surrounding party; it does not make you weak for being a good person and showing you care.
